Quick answer: In 2026, most Indian businesses pay ₹15,000–₹50,000 per month for SEO from a small or mid-sized agency. Freelancers usually charge ₹5,000–₹15,000 per month, and competitive national, e-commerce or enterprise work costs ₹50,000–₹1,50,000+ per month. A one-time SEO audit costs about ₹10,000–₹50,000. Plan for at least 6 months before judging results, because SEO builds slowly and then compounds.
- Price depends mostly on how competitive your keywords are and how much work your site needs, not on the number of keywords.
- A monthly retainer is the normal model. One-time audits are a smart, low-risk first step.
- Anyone who guarantees a #1 ranking is a red flag. Google itself says no one can guarantee it.
- Judge SEO by cost per lead or sale over 12–24 months, not by the monthly fee alone.
- Good SEO now also covers AI search (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity), which draws on the same pages.
SEO pricing in India at a glance (2026)
The table below shows typical monthly fees by who does the work. These are market ranges from published Indian agency price guides and what we see in client proposals. Your quote can sit outside them.
| Who does the work | Typical monthly fee | What you usually get | Good fit for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelancer | ₹5,000–₹15,000 | One person handling on-page fixes, some content and basic link building | Very small local businesses testing SEO |
| Small or mid-sized agency | ₹15,000–₹50,000 | Audit, technical fixes, 2–6 new or improved pages a month, local SEO, monthly report | Most SMBs, clinics, coaching institutes, service businesses |
| Senior or specialist agency | ₹50,000–₹1,50,000+ | Strategy, larger content output, digital PR and links, technical SEO, AI-search visibility tracking | Competitive national brands, e-commerce, funded startups |
| In-house SEO hire | Salary plus tools | A dedicated person, but one skill set | Larger companies with steady content needs |
How much does each type of SEO cost?
The kind of SEO you need changes the price more than anything else.
| Type of SEO | Typical monthly range | Main work involved |
|---|---|---|
| Local SEO (one city) | ₹10,000–₹30,000 | Google Business Profile, reviews, local pages, consistent name/address/phone across listings |
| National SEO | ₹25,000–₹75,000 | Keyword research, content for many topics, technical fixes, link earning |
| E-commerce SEO | ₹40,000–₹1,50,000+ | Category and product page optimisation, site structure, crawl issues, product schema |
| International SEO | ₹50,000–₹2,00,000+ | Country or language versions, hreflang setup, market-specific content |
| One-time SEO audit | ₹10,000–₹50,000 (one-off) | Technical, content and competitor review with a prioritised fix list |
What are the common SEO pricing models in India?
- Monthly retainer (most common). A fixed fee for an agreed scope of ongoing work. Best for steady growth because SEO needs continuous effort.
- Project-based. A flat fee for a defined job, such as an audit, a site migration or a one-time content build. Typically ₹15,000 to ₹2,00,000+, depending on size.
- Hourly consulting. Roughly ₹500–₹5,000 an hour depending on seniority. Useful when your own team does the work and needs expert guidance.
- Performance-based. You pay per ranking or per lead. It sounds safe but often rewards easy, low-value keywords. If you choose it, tie payment to leads or revenue you can verify, not to rankings.
What decides your SEO price?
- Competition. Ranking a dental clinic in Indiranagar is a different job from ranking a personal-loan page across India. Harder keywords need more content, more authority and more months.
- Your starting point. A fast, well-built site with some existing traffic is cheaper to grow than a site that first needs technical rescue work.
- Scope. One city vs. the whole country vs. several countries. More locations and more products mean more pages to build and maintain.
- Content volume. Content is usually the biggest cost inside a retainer. Two strong pages a month and ten strong pages a month are very different budgets.
- Seniority of the team. Cheap packages are often run by junior staff following a template. Senior people cost more but make better decisions about what to do first.
- Website platform. Changes on a custom-coded site may need developer time. On WordPress or Shopify they are often quicker.
What should you get at each budget?
Use this as a checklist when comparing quotes. If a proposal at a given price does not include most of these, ask why.
Around ₹15,000–₹25,000 a month
- A starting audit and a written 90-day plan
- Google Business Profile optimisation and review strategy (for local businesses)
- On-page fixes: titles, headings, internal links, page speed basics
- 1–3 new or improved pages a month
- A monthly report showing work done, rankings, traffic and leads
Around ₹25,000–₹60,000 a month
- Everything above, plus deeper keyword and competitor research
- 3–8 well-researched pages or articles a month
- Regular technical checks (indexing, crawl errors, Core Web Vitals)
- Structured data for your business, services and articles
- Genuine link and mention earning, such as partnerships, local press and industry listings
₹60,000 a month and above
- A content engine that produces pages every week, plus digital PR
- Conversion work on landing pages, so traffic turns into leads
- Tracking of AI search visibility (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity)
- Dedicated senior strategist time and regular review calls
How do you work out whether SEO is worth it?
Compare SEO with your other ways of getting customers using cost per lead over 12–24 months. Here is the simple maths we walk clients through.
Worked example (illustrative numbers): A coaching institute spends ₹40,000 a month on SEO. In months 1–4 it gets very few extra leads. By months 7–12 organic search brings about 80 enquiries a month. Over the full year that is ₹4,80,000 in spend. If the year produced about 550 organic leads, the cost is roughly ₹870 per lead, and it falls in year two because earlier pages keep ranking. The same leads from search ads would cost click price ÷ conversion rate, every month, for as long as you pay.
Your numbers will be different. The point is to measure SEO on the same cost-per-lead basis as your ads, over a long enough window.
How long does SEO take to show results?
For most businesses, early movement shows in 3–4 months and meaningful leads in 6–12 months. Local SEO in a less crowded area is usually quicker. Competitive national keywords take longer. Be wary of anyone who promises big results in weeks.
What are the red flags when hiring an SEO agency?
- Guaranteed rankings. Google's own hiring guide says it plainly: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google."
- "10 keywords for ₹5,000" packages. Keyword-count pricing is outdated. You want leads and revenue, not a list of rankings for terms nobody searches.
- Link numbers instead of link quality. "500 backlinks a month" usually means spammy directories that can hurt your site.
- Secret methods. A good SEO can explain in plain language exactly what they will change and why.
- No access or reporting. You should own your Google Search Console, Analytics and Business Profile accounts, and see every change made.
What should you ask before you hire?
These questions are based on Google's own advice for hiring an SEO:
- Can you show examples of past work and results in businesses like mine?
- Do you follow Google Search Essentials (Google's rules for websites)?
- What results do you expect, and in what timeframe?
- What exactly will you do in the first 90 days?
- How will you report to me, and will you share every change you make to my site?
- How will you track leads and revenue, not just rankings?
Does SEO still matter now that AI answers search questions?
Yes, and it matters more. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode are "rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems," and that a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to be shown as a supporting link. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot also pull from pages that search crawlers can reach. The pages that rank well are the ones AI tools most often read and cite.
When you budget for SEO in 2026, ask your agency how they will cover AI search too: clear answers, evidence-backed content, clean structured data and tracking of where your brand appears in AI answers. Our AEO guide explains the full checklist.
It pays off quickly when done well. For iProledge, a Bengaluru coaching institute, OffBuddy grew the share of AI answers mentioning the brand from 3.8% to 24% in 3 months. For Deepsolv, an ad-tech platform, it went from 0% to 6.8% in 2 months.
